Birth of a Shapeshifter Novel

Birth of a Shapeshifter Novel

Cover Reveal of Sanctuary, Shifter Chronicles Book One

Years ago I posted my first blog ever. It was called, Birth and a Novel. I was pregnant with my son (who is now six) and writing the first draft of Bravyn, Book One in my Vikings of Islandia series. I believe at the time it was called, Hidden. But, well, things change. =)

The Nanowrimo Word Dump

I worked on Bravyn for 3 years doing multiple drafts and edits, honing the story, having another baby, switching jobs, traveling, and… you get the idea, living. In November of 2011 I decided I wanted to give Nanowrimo a try to see if my 12 months to a first draft benchmark could be improved upon. After all, I had learned a few things in 3 years of writing and editing.

Taking it up a Notch, or Two, or Three, or Four

That month I wrote draft one of Sanctuary, Book One of the Shifter Chronicles, which also started with a different name, I think it was Shifter or Shapeshifter. Over the last 5 years I have written 3 more novels (thank you, Nanowrimo) and fine-tuned Sanctuary with the help of my faithful Writers Critique Group; we have no pixie-clever name for ourselves. Sanctuary was also helped along by the crazy-mad editing skills of Ingrid Sundberg, who not only improved my story through her fierce dissection of my characters, but she taught me a thing or two about writing prose.

Bringing in the CreativIndie Design Master

And, that’s the very short version of how we arrived at today. The day I actually, for real, tell the world I’m not just writing and editing book after book, I’m going to start publishing. To back that up with a bit of grit, I wanted to share the cover with you. It was designed by the formidable Derek Murphy of CreativIndie, whose prolific talent makes me think I might be a lazy hack. He took my simple dark urban fantasy concept to a-whole-nother level. Even my six-year-old, when I told him I was publishing a book, asked with excitement, “The one with the girl in the red dress, Mama?!” I was thrilled to say, “Yes!”

So, thank you, Derek Murphy. I’m incredibly proud to have this striking and intriguing cover represent the story inside.
